As a kid, I loved my birthdays more than I loved anything else. Most kids preferred Christmas, because you got more presents, apparently. Even if that was true, for me, it wasn't always about the presents. Sure, it was great to get gifts, but I liked the fact that for one day, just one, no one argued or shouted. And that everyone came together to celebrate with me.

"Die, die, die!!" Dan shouted, pounding the buttons furiously on the xbox controller.

Phil shook his head at Dan.

Unbeknownst to most people, Dan always got unhealthily involved in video games. He would play, rant, and twitch in anger whenever that character on the screen fell, costing him another life.

"It's only a game," Phil would tell him, usually chuckling to himself at Dan's childish pouts once he ran out of lives.

"Dammit!" The brunette threw the controller on the ground, curling his legs up to his chest and crossing his arms, pouting. The action was sudden-enough to shake Phil out of his thoughts, so he looked at the screen.

~Game Over~

Oh, here we go again....

"Dan, it's only a-"

"I know it's just a game, Phil!!" Dan snapped, his adorable pout sending butterflies fluttering in Phil's stomach.

The older boy slowly slipped his arm around him, "Then just calm down. Losing a video game is not that big of a deal."

"I just- UGH." Dan threw his arms up in the air. "Why is everything just pissing me off lately?!"

Phil froze. If Dan was getting pissed off at everything, then he wouldn't be able to...

His blue eyes glazed over. No, he had to say something. No matter how Dan feels about it, he deserves to know.

And he wasn't about to wait until it was too late.

"Dan," Phil whispered, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. Dan tensed, but didn't turn around.

What was he supposed to say now? How will Dan respond? Will he be mad?

"Dan, I..." He trailed off again, feeling tears prick at his eyes. His previous confidence suddenly faded.

"Phil," Dan was facing him at this point, "You know you can tell me anything, right?"
The ebony-haired boy turned his head to look up at him. Those dazzling chocolate eyes glimmering with concern, hopefulness...

He slammed his lips against Dan's.

Phil held himself there.

Maybe this will be like those fanfics...

Maybe this will be like a fairytale....

Maybe.....

Maybe he'll kiss me back....

After a moment of no reaction on Dan's part, Phil pulled away, devastated.

"Dan, I-!" He gasped, throat closing and eyes watering, "I didn't mean- I don't want- I'm...."

Phil let his emotional barrier break, worn down by months of hiding these feelings in his chest that hurt whenever Dan looked at him-

"I'M SORRY." He wailed, suddenly standing to make a rush to his room.

Yet, Phil's escape was stopped by a sudden grasp on his wrist, forcing him to plop back down on the couch.

"Phil..."

He wouldn't- no, he couldn't- bring himself to look Dan in the eyes. But the brunette continued anyways.

"This.... this won't change anything between us, alright? I'm sorry."

Phil pulled himself from his thoughts, looking at Dan warily, "You're sorry? For what?? I was the one who FUCKING kissed his best friend!"

"I'm sorry... I'm sorry that I don't feel the same way. I'm sorry that I don't love you, someone who is so perfect, the same way you love me. Although I wish I did, I don't.... That's why I'm sorry."

Phil looked back up into Dan's eyes.

"Stop.... It- that makes it hurt...."

"I know. And I'm sorry for that, too. But above all else, I am your best friend. I won't let anything get in the way of that."

Phil felt his eyes water again, not only because of his heartbreak, but also from happiness. Comfort...

"I... Thank you, Dan..."
